World Design Capital is about design in its broadest sense, and about designing better cities for people.
Cape Town was designated WDC 2014 at the International Design Alliance (IDA) Congress in October 2011. Previous winners include Helsinki, Seoul and Turin, and rival shortlisted cities for WDC 2014 were Bilbao and Dublin.
Media24 will collaborate with Cape Town Design (the implementation company of WDC 2014) with respect to the Competition. Apart from the primary goal to create a fresh, innovative and forward-thinking new facade for the Naspers Centre, the marketing and exposure surrounding the Competition signifies Media24’s support of one of the key strategic objectives of WDC 2014, namely “To educate the public about design’s problem solving capabilities and the potential to transform lives within our uniquely South African context”.
The Competition recognises and manifests Media24’s ability to inform, entertain, educate and connect people through its print, digital and e-commerce platforms. WDC 2014 presents a unique opportunity for Media24 to engage with the broader public to develop a better understanding of how integral design is in our everyday lives and how it can be used as a tool to support the changes we would like to see in our homes, schools, neighbourhoods, cities and the country at large.
